Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to witness a mega auction towards the end of this year. This mega auction takes place every three years. This time, the IPL mega auction will also include two new teams. These two teams will be announced on 25th October 2021.
With BCCI allowing only three players to be retained, many teams will have to sacrifice key players. A few of them may also part aways with their regular captain.

Let us look at the expected captains of all ten teams in IPL 2022:
Expected Captains Of 10 IPL Teams
Mumbai Indians- Rohit Sharma
There is absolutely no doubt that Rohit Sharma will be retained in Mumbai Indian’s squad as the captain. He is the most successful captain of IPL with five title wins under his belt. Rohit Sharma is also one of the best opening batsmen playing the IPL, and his role in the team is of paramount importance.
The way Rohit Sharma has evolved over the years as a player and as a captain speaks a lot of volume about his dominance in the shortest format of the game.
Chennai Super Kings- MS Dhoni
Chennai Super Kings will most likely retain Dhoni as the captain for one more year. Dhoni is the second most successful captain of IPL with leading CSK to three IPL trophies. He is the key member of the side, and his experience is worth gold to the team. There are many talks about Dhoni retiring from IPL, but his fitness can still allow him to play one more year.
With Dhoni in the team in IPL 2022, this will enable Chennai to have a smooth transition for the new captain, who will be nurtured under Dhoni’s guidance in IPL 2022.
Delhi Capitals – Rishabh Pant
Delhi Capitals made Rishabh Pant captain of the team during the start of the IPL 2021 due to injury to Sreyesh Iyer. Under Rishabh Pant’s captaincy, the team has performed well, winning nine matches out of fifteen.
However, Sreyesh Iyer is now fit and expected to return, but the team management will most likely stick with Pant as the captain since they can see a bright future due to Rishabh Pant’s age and his x-factor. He has the potential to be the next superstar for India and in the IPL arena.
Royal Challengers Bangalore- Glenn Maxwell
Virat Kohli is the leading run-scorer in the IPL, with 6244 runs in 206 matches. But, it’s also a fact that Kohli-led RCB has failed to lift the IPL trophy even once. Kohli cannot be blamed for this as he cannot play in place of all 11 members. Everyone needs to contribute as a team. He is the crucial player in the side and is too good a captain to be replaced at this point.
Kohli had announced last month that he would remain in the team but this would be his last IPL as a captain. Glenn Maxwell could be his rightful successor.
Punjab Kings – Mayank Agarwal
KL Rahul is one of the most successful batsmen in the last 3 years in IPL. He has been the Orange Cap winner last year. This time too he is a contender for the Orange Cap with 626 runs. He has guided Punjab to good scores with his dependable and aggressive batting. Though he has played well, as a captain, he failed. His team has not lived up to the expectations and has lost vital matches in the group stage and failed to qualify for playoffs.
According to some reports, he will leave Punjab before the mega auction and make himself available for auction. In such a situation, Mayank Agarwal can become the captain of Punjab.
Sunrisers Hyderabad- Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Sunrisers Hyderabad had gone through turmoil this IPL season when they removed David Warner mid-way from captaincy due to an internal rift. Although his successor Kane Williamson is an excellent captain for the national team, he has failed to have an impact in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The team may look at giving Bhuvneshwar Kumar the captaincy role in IPL 2022. He was the vice-captain for India in the recently concluded limited-overs series against Sri Lanka. Bhuvi can be a good captain as he has a calm mindset and can guide SRH to glory.
Kolkata Knight Riders – Suryakumar Yadav
Eoin Morgan has not been fruitful as a captain and has failed to lead the team effectively. With the maximum three players allowed to be retained ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, it is improbable that they will retain Eoin Morgan in the team. They have Dinesh Karthik also in the group, but even his inclusion is also questionable. As a result, KKR may go with a new captain from those players released from the other team.
Suryakumar Yadav can be a great asset to KKR and can also lead the team in IPL 2022. He is expected to be released by Mumbai Indians. As a result, KKR will surely like to purchase him and appoint him as the captain of IPL 2022.
Rajasthan Royals – Prithvi Shaw
The IPL governing council is allowing only a maximum of three players to be retained from each team. As a result, they have to release a few quality International players who are probable captains. Sanju Samson, the regular captain of RR, has failed to lead the team better, which is reflected in the points table.
Rajasthan may look to add Prithvi Shaw to the squad. He is expected to be released from Delhi Capitals. Prithvi Shaw has good experience leading the under-19 Indian team and other domestic teams. His explosive batting and good captaincy can change the fortunes for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2022.
Ahmedabad – Ravindra Jadeja
Two new teams will be introduced in IPL 2022. One of them is expected to be Ahmedabad. Whoever will be the owner of this team will have to build the team from scratch. Before that, all the existing eight franchises will also announce their retained players list. We expect Ahmedabad to go all guns blazing to purchase Ravindra Jadeja, provided he is released from CSK.
Jadeja, who hails from Saurashtra, can be an excellent option for the captain for Ahmedabad. We all know the value of Jadeja in the T20 format. His presence will be of paramount importance in building the new team.
Lucknow- Suresh Raina
One of the two new teams in IPL 2022 is expected to be Lucknow. Like Ahmedabad, they will also have to build the team from zero. Suresh Raina has been one of the best batsmen in the IPL history, accumulating 5528 runs in 205 matches. The Mr. Consistent of IPL is currently part of CSK. They might release him ahead of IPL 2022 if they think about building a young team.
We expect Suresh Raina to play at least two more years in the IPL, given his fitness. Raina, who hails from the city of Nawab Lucknow, can be a great addition to the side. He has a lot of experience and can guide the new team to perfection.
