Indian Premier League: History, Teams, Controversy, Sponsors, Winners, Records And All You Need To Know. A professional Twenty20 cricket competition in India is called the Indian Premier League (IPL). The league was founded in 2007 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the inaugural season began in 2008. The months of March, April, and May are when this is conducted annually. Indian Premier League is one of the biggest and most lucrative cricket leagues in the world.
The IPL is made up of many teams representing various Indian cities, each controlled by a distinct franchise. These franchises are obtained through a bidding procedure by corporate companies and celebrities. The teams are called after their respective cities, such as the Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Each side may field a roster of up to 25 players, with no more than 8 foreign players. The teams participate in a double round-robin style, which is followed by playoffs and a title game. The playoffs consist of two qualifiers and an eliminator, followed by the final between the top two teams.
The IPL has drawn some of cricket’s greatest names, including international players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle, as well as top Local talent like Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Hardik Pandya. Indian Premier League (IPL) Teams
The IPL began with eight teams, however during the course of 15 years, some teams were changed, some were debunked, the names of certain teams were altered owing to ownership, and some were additionally banned due to Controversies.
The teams were Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Deccan Chargers, Royal Challenger Bangalore, and Kings 11 Punjab at the time of the inauguration.

IPL officials invited two additional franchisees in 2010, and when Kochi and Pune were chosen through the bidding procedure, they christened their teams Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India. In 2011, the IPL held its first season with ten teams.
Nevertheless, due to disagreements with the board of directors and with the owners of the clubs, Kochi Tuskers Kerala withdrew from the IPL after its first season in 2011. Pune Warriors India also played for just three seasons before being expelled from the IPL in 2013 owing to internal problems, leaving the league with only eight teams.
However, the Deccan Chargers’ owners changed in 2013, and the team was renamed Sunrisers Hyderabad. Nevertheless, the Delhi Daredevils were renamed Delhi Capitals in 2019, while the name of Kings 11 Punjab was also changed to Punjab Kings.
Due to the spot-fixing claims that occurred in 2013, the Supreme Court expelled Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two years in 2015. Gujarat Lions and Pune Super Giants were the two new teams introduced over the next two years. They only competed for two seasons, and the IPL returned to its original eight teams in 2018 with the return of CSK and RR.
IPL reopened its doors for additional franchises, and two more cities were chosen through a bidding procedure in 2021. Lucknow and Ahmedabad made the highest bids and secured the rights to the franchise; in 2022, these two cities had competed in the IPL for the first time as the Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans.
IPL Spot Fixing Controversy
Due to their involvement in a spot-fixing incident during the 2013 IPL season, CSK and RR were suspended from the IPL for two years (2016 and 2017 seasons). The controversy saw numerous players and officials from both teams being accused of unlawful betting and match-fixing.
In May 2013, the Delhi Police arrested three Rajasthan Royals players and many bookmakers in connection with the event. It was discovered During the Probe, that Chennai Super Kings team principal Gurunath Meiyappan was implicated in illegal betting, while club owner Raj Kundra was also found guilty of betting on his own team, the Rajasthan Royals.
The IPL governing council formed a commission to examine the situation, which resulted in both teams being suspended for two years. The players engaged in the incident were also barred from engaging in any cricket-related activity for various lengths of time.

Title Sponsors of IPL From 2008 To Date
DLF was the IPL’s inaugural title sponsor, and they did so for four years, from 2008 to 2012. DLF’s contract expired in 2012, and they chose not to extend it. Pepsi was the Title Sponsor from 2013 to 2015.
Vivo acquired the rights in 2016 and sponsored it for the next four years, from 2016 to 2019. They signed for two years in 2016, and then for five years in 2018. Nevertheless, due to the Galwan Valley military standoff between India and China in 2020, it cancelled its arrangement before the contract expired. Dream11, the gaming platform, stepped into the void left by Vivo by sponsoring the 2020 IPL.
Vivo makes a reappearance in place of Dream11, a gaming platform. From 2018 through 2022, Vivo will have sponsorship rights for 5 years. In 2021, Vivo returned, anticipating that the tensions between China and India would fade. Evidently, though, it kept coming back to haunt the business.
With Tata Group as the new title sponsor, the IPL now has a true representative of Indian business at its helm. TATA Group also sponsored the 2022 IPL.
