IPL 2022 started on 26 March with a match between VIVO IPL 2021 champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). In the first match of season 15, Kolkata Knight Riders, captained by Shreyas Iyer, started with a win by defeating Ravindra Jadeja-led Chennai Super Kings. In IPL 2022, there are four such captains who have got the captaincy for the first time. After Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni relinquished the captaincy of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), this responsibility was given to Faf du Plessis and Ravindra Jadeja. Hardik Pandya was made the captain of the new team Gujarat Titans.

Before IPL 2022 mega auction, KL Rahul not only left the captaincy of Punjab Kings but also left the team. After this Mayank Agarwal was given the command of Punjab Kings.
