IPL 2022: Why Did Chennai Super Kings (CSK) & Mumbai Indians (MI) Fail To Perform In The Tournament?. The Indian Premier League 15th edition is currently underway. Almost half of the tournament is already over. This time, the addition of two new teams in IPL 2022 has resulted in a 10-team contest. Ironically, the two teams who were inducted for the first time are sitting at the top positions in IPL 2022 points table. However, the most consistent team in the IPL history, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have won just a single match out of 6 games, while 5 times IPL champion lost all 6 matches so far. And they are all but certain to be eliminated from the IPL 2022 playoff stage.

A team as big as CSK looking in such a terrible form is something that hardly any CSK fans (largest fan base among all IPL teams) would have dreamed about. Similarly, Mumbai Indians have played even worse than CSK, losing all their 6 games so far. Let us look at the reasons why CSK and MI failed to perform in IPL 2022:

CHANGE IN CAPTAINCY AND JADEJA’s POOR PERFORMANCE
MS Dhoni, regarded among the most successful captains in IPL history, surprised everyone when he announced his decision to step down from the captaincy before the start of the IPL. This came as a huge surprise for the fans. Ravindra Jadeja was appointed the captain. However, he has failed to lead the team from the front. A few tactical errors in field placements can easily be seen. He has also not used the right bowlers at the right time, which has led to the team’s downfall.
Jadeja is an allrounder and has played many match-winning innings for Chennai. Sometimes as a batsman and sometimes as a bowler. But in this tournament neither he is able to score runs nor is taking wickets.

RUTURAJ GAIKWAD’S FORM
Ruturaj Gaikwad was one of the best performers for CSK in the last two years. In fact, he was also the most consistent batsman across all the teams. He won the orange cap in VIVO IPL 2021. But, 2022 has been a poor season for Ruturaj Gaikwad with the bat. In 6 innings, he has scored just 108 runs. This includes 48 balls and 73 runs in the last game against Gujarat Titans.
Ruturaj Gaikwad used to provide a solid start to CSK in the previous two seasons, but it has not happened this season, and this is one of the reasons for their downfall.

INEXPERIENCED BOWLING ATTACK
Chennai Super Kings got a huge setback before the start of the IPL 2022 season when their premier bowler Deepak Chahar suffered an injury. This was a body blow for them, and it resulted in a weak bowling attack for CSK. Barring Jadeja and Bravo, there is hardly any bowler with enough experience, which has made them suffer immensely this season.
NO POWER HITTERS IN CSK & MI
T20 cricket demands players who can take the game away from the opposition in a few balls. In the IPL 2022 mega auction, they released Faf Du Plessis, who was performing exceptionally well at the top order. They brought back Robin Uthappa, Ambati Rayudu, etc., who don’t have that ability to score runs from the word go. The middle-order has also lacked firepower, with MS Dhoni, Jadeja, and Bravo failing to score with ease.
The same case is with Mumbai. Opener Ishan Kishan performed well in a couple of matches but he could not take the team to the threshold of victory. Kiran Pollard and Jaydev Unadkat are unable to score runs in the last over.
MISSING CORE PLAYERS
Mumbai Indians surprised everyone by not going for their core players in the IPL 2022 mega auction. Players such as Trent Boult, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, and Quinton de cock have been integral players in their squad in the last few years. They have missed these key players badly in the ongoing IPL 2022.
FORM OF ROHIT SHARMA
Rohit Sharma has looked off-color in the first 6 matches of IPL 2022. One of the most successful T20 batsmen ever, Rohit has accumulated just 114 runs in 6 innings. Though he has got starts in 3 innings, he has failed to capitalize it. The presence of Rohit Sharma at the top and scoring runs is very crucial for Mumbai, but sadly, this has not happened this season.
