The Indian Premier League (IPL) 15th edition will take place next year. Before that, there will be a mega auction to decide which franchise will opt for which players. This auction is going to be a grand one due to the addition of two new teams. Subsequently, 25 players from each of the two new teams will be up for grabs to fill the squad.

This mega auction for IPL 2022 will mark the beginning of the 10 team IPL format. A lot of news has already begun to make headlines related to IPL 2022 and its modalities. Let us have a look at a few key factors related to IPL 2022.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction Date

IPL 2022 mega auction is expected to be held in January – February 2022. The reason speculated for the same is that IPL 2022 will start during the month of March-April. BCCI will have to start IPL 2022 a few weeks earlier than its usual schedule to accommodate all the matches. However, the official announcement will be made by BCCI towards the 4th quarter of 2021.

This auction will be a mega auction. For those unaware, the IPL mega auction takes place every three years, while the regular auction takes place every year. This time ten teams will take part in the auction so it will go on for two to three days.

IPL 2022 New Teams Announcement

There has been a lot of buzz regarding the two new teams that will be inducted in the IPL foray. BCCI has officially announced that the auction for two new teams will take place on 17th October 2021. The final announcement will be made on 25th October 2021 in Dubai. The base price for each franchise will start from 2000 crores. According to an estimate, the price of both the teams can go up to 15 to 20k crores.

BCCI has shortlisted six cities as the probable contenders for the two new teams. These are Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Ranchi, Guwahati, Cuttack, Dharamshala. According to sources, Ahmedabad and Lucknow are the front runners to grab the spot.

Adani Group, Naveen Jindal, Manchester United, Torrent Group & Sanjeev Goenka are the frontrunners and serious bidders to buy new teams.

IPL 2022 Retention

Before every new auction, BCCI comes with guidelines regarding the maximum number of players allowed to be retained by each franchise. For IPL 2022 mega auction, it is expected that BCCI will enable each franchise to retain a maximum of 3 or 4 players. This can be in the form of 3 Indian and 1 International or 2 Indian and 2 International players.

BCCI is mulling to opt this strategy so that the franchise doesn’t take advantage by keeping all their key players. The official announcement regarding the exact number of players allowed to be retained will be made later.

It is speculated that after the new team’s announcements BCCI will announce IPL 2022 mega auction retention policy.

A retention policy can be announced by the end of this month or in early November.

IPL 2022 RTM Rules

RTM, which stands for Right To Match, is a crucial factor that helps any franchise get back their released player. This works in a way that the team that releases a player can purchase him again by paying the amount equivalent to the budding amount for which another team buys the same player.

For example, if CSK releases Raina and Mumbai purchases him for 5 corers, CSK can use the RTM card and repurchase Raina by paying 5 crores to MI. The maximum number of RTM cards allowed by each franchise for the IPL 2022 mega auction is expected to be 2.

IPL 2022 Franchise Purse Money

The purse money acts as a bank balance for the IPL team owners. With the help of this money, they can purchase a new player in the IPL auction. The maximum amount that each IPL franchise is allowed to spend is limited to crores. 85 cr. However, BCCI has decided to extend this to 90 crores for IPL 2022, further increasing to 95 crores in IPL 2023 and 100 crores in IPL 2024.
