The time is approaching for cricket’s biggest carnival’s most awaited curtain raiser event, the IPL 2022 mega auction. After a lot of speculation, the final date has been revealed, and it will take place on Feb 12th and 13th at Bengaluru. This mega auction is supposed to be the last IPL mega auction, as the team owners have requested BCCI to do away with the same. The addition of two new teams for IPL 2022 has also brought new dimensions to this biggest cricket bonanza in India. Let us look at a few key attributes related to IPL 2022.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction Date, Time and Venue

IPL 2022 mega auction is scheduled to take place on the second weekend of February, 12th and 13th Feb. It will be a two-day event with the IPL 2022 mega auction timing to start from 10 am and go all the way to 8 pm. If reports are to be believed, BCCI has zeroed in on the hotel Leela Palace (Bengaluru) as the probable venue for this event.

IPL 2022 Window and Venue

The addition of two new teams for IPL 2022, Ahmedabad and Lucknow, has meant that it will be an extended season. A total of 74 matches will be played this IPL season. Reports suggest that the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League will kick-start on April 2nd at Chennai. The final will be held on June 5th, 2022. The fans can expect two months of non-stop cricket bonanza.

As per the previous year’s trends, we expect the IPL governing council to select Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mohali, Jaipur as the probable venues. However, Lucknow and Ahmedabad will also be added to this list. If the COVID situation worsens during March-April, BCCI will have no choice but to stage the event in 1-2 big stadiums to curtail players’ movements.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction Retention Rules

IPL 2022 retention rules were declared by the IPL governing council 2-3 months ago. According to the retention rules, there was no Right to Match (RTM) facility this time. For those unaware, Right to Match allows teams to get back their released players by paying the exact auction amount of the respective player in the auction.

Talking of the maximum players allowed to be retained by each franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, a maximum of 4 players were allowed. It can be in the ratio of 2 India and 2 foreign players or 3 Indian and 1 foreign player.

The maximum budget allocated to the teams before the IPL 2022 mega auction is 90 crore. Out of this, they have to pick their respective retained players. However, the maximum amount for an uncapped player in the retention rules is 4 crore. Talking about the two new teams, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, they can choose 3 players before starting the IPL 2022 mega auction. The maximum allocated budget for them is 33 crores, to choose these 3 players.

IPL 2022, Franchise Purse Value Bifurcation

The BCCI had increased the purse value from 85 crores to 90 crores for IPL 2022 season. All the teams were given November 30th as the deadline to declare the names of players whom they are retaining. The teams announced the names according to the deadline. Before the start of the IPL 2022 mega auction, BCCI made a structure that defined the maximum amount any franchise needs to spend on the individual bracket of retention players. These are listed below:

  • Player 1- 16 crore
  • Player 2- 12 crore
  • Player 3- 8 crore
  • Player 4- 6 crore

The purse value that was set to remain after retention:

  • If the franchise retained 4 players – 48 crore
  • If the franchise retained 3 players – 57 crore
  • If the franchise retained 2 players – 66 crore
  • If the franchise retained 1 player- 76 crore
  • If the franchise retained 0 players- 90 crore

Punjab Kings – 72 crore

Sunrisers Hyderabad- 68 crore
