The history of T20 matches is not very old. The first T20 International match was played between the New Zealand and England women’s teams on 5 August 2004, with New Zealand defeating England by 9 runs.

The first T20 international match (men’s) was played at Eden Park in Auckland on 17 February 2005 between Australia vs New Zealand.

As the matches progressed, their popularity increased. In 2007, the ICC organized the T20 World Cup for the first time in South Africa. India won this title by defeating Pakistan.

Several T20 leagues started after the popularity of the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup. The BCCI started the Indian Premier League, in 2008, which utilizes the North American sports franchise system with eight teams in major Indian cities. IPL is now the largest cricket league.
