With complete domination by Team India on Day 1 of the first Test at Headingley, India was at 359/3 at stumps. In an all-round batting display for the team, the captain, Shubman Gill, stood at the crease scoring 127*, and Yashasvi Jaiswal refined matters with another hundred of 101, with the visiting team having taken complete control, being put in to bat first with clouds over the stadium.

Gill and Jaiswal smashed centuries on Day 1 of IND vs ENG 1st Test

Gill, on his Test debut as captain, became only the fourth Indian to score a century on a Test captaincy debut and joined select company that includes Virat Kohli. Gill’s innings was a nice mix of control and flair, and he paced his innings just right, getting 127 off 175 balls with 12 fours and one six.

Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his beautiful run of overseas Test cricket with a stylish innings of 101. He is now the first Indian batter to score centuries on Test debut tours in both Australia and England, which unmistakably identifies him as India’s next big batting star.

Jaiswal and KL Rahul got their team off to an inspired start with a 91-run stand for the first wicket that set a robust foundation for a good total. Along the way, Rishabh Pant gave India a free pass to the 359 mark in influential mode while hitting fours and sixes, finally finishing off with a dash of fireworks with 65 runs off 102 balls*.

England’s choice to bowl first backfired on them as India batted superbly as the pitch eased. Ben Stokes took 2 wickets for England. To add to their woes, they conceded five penalty runs when the ball struck the helmet placed at the wicketkeeper’s end, leading to Law 28.3.3 being applied, which senior player Joe Root must have greatly enjoyed.

Records and Stats of Day 1:

Shubman Gill: 4th Indian captain to score a 100 on Test captaincy debut.
Jaiswal: 1st Indian to score 100 while debuting touring in both Australia and England.
India’s 91-run opening partnership: The first opening partnership with fifty-plus runs at Headingley in 11 years.
5 penalty runs issued because of the helmet’s positioning.
Rishabh Pant is now the fastest Asian wicketkeeper to finish 3000 runs in tests.

The pitch should be good for batting, and fine weather is predicted, with India looking to unveil a jumbo first innings score, and England will need early strikes in the second new ball, as they will risk batting out of the game altogether if they concede runs.
