Difference Between IPL 2022 Mega Auction and IPL 2021 Auction Rules
Most cricket fans are unaware of the difference between an IPL auction and an IPL mega auction. A mega auction takes place after every 3 years while IPL regular auction takes place every year as an IPL mini-auction.
These Auctions are held to ensure that teams get an opportunity to get the team balance as well as it’s an opportunity for players especially Indian uncapped players and foreign players to enter the IPL.
In IPL Mega Auction, each IPL team gets the opportunity to retain a maximum of 3 players by a combination of the RTM and Direct Retention.

Schedule for IPL 2022 Auction
There is a fixed schedule for IPL 2022 players’ auction that will be followed for IPL 2022 mega auction. On the first day of the bidding, the marquee players are put on sale. On the second day, accelerated bidding takes place which ensures that all the remaining players are put under the hammer.
Preparation of Teams for IPL Mega Auction 2022
This is called as pre-auction stage. Here, all the team management which includes team owners has a brainstorming session. They have regular 4-5 meetings where they analyze their team and come up with a broad framework about which category of players to focus on in the next auction. This may also include the participation of the current team captain.
Rules for Squad Strength in IPL Auction 2022
As per the rules, a maximum of 25 players is allowed in a single IPL squad. The rule also specifies that each team needs to have a minimum of 18 players. This includes a maximum of 8 international players. This 25 players list includes both capped and uncapped players. This will be followed for IPL 2022 mega auction rules. Although BCCI can change this rule till now it is the same rule.
How to apply for IPL Auction 2022
The IPL governing council has laid down few rules and eligibility criteria for under 19 Indian players to participate in the IPL 2022 mega auction.

The aspirant should be born on or after the 1st of April 2003. He should be at least 19 years old to participate in the IPL 2022 mega auction.
The player should have at least played one match of list A or first class
The player seeking IPL auction approval should have been registered with the state association.
For the uncapped player who has given up playing domestic cricket, he should seek prior written permission from the BCCI.
The RTM in IPL Auction Rules
The term RTM stands for Right to Match. As per the IPL 2022 mega auction rules, a team can use the RTM card to retain a player at the mega auctions by paying the exact amount to equal the winning bid.
This is a method used by the franchises to retain their key players. However, if a team does not retain a player, then they can use a maximum of three RTMs only.
RTM Cards will be available to all IPL franchises in IPL 2022 auctions but the final rules for the IPL 2022 Mega Auction are still undisclosed by the BCCI and IPL management.
IPL 2022 Retention Rules
A few Days back reports surface that BCCI is planning to increase the total number of retention player limit for IPL 2022 mega auctions. According to unconfirmed sources, the existing limit of 3 players could have increased to 4. But according to Cricbuzz, BCCI is not in the mood to extend the number of players for retention.
The mega retention rule was that a team can get 5 players from its previous year’s squad. However, they had permission to use a maximum of three retentions or three RTM Cards. Also, there was a limit of three capped Indian players through Right to Match (RTMs) and retentions total.
Suppose if Chennai Super Kings retain, Raina, Jadeja, and Imran Tahir then they will have to release, Ruturaj, Bravo, and Rayudu They cannot even use RTM for them at the auction.
By direct retention rule, a franchise can retain a maximum of 3 players & then they get 2 right to match (RTM) cards at their disposal. However, if an IPL franchise decides to retain only two players via direct retention, then they get three RTM cards.
Latest updates about IPL 2022 mega auction
According to some sources, the name of 2 new teams for IPL 2022 has surfaced. Ahmedabad and Lucknow could be these 2 new teams who could take part in IPL 2022 mega auction.
The BCCI was scheduled to announce two new teams in the IPL in May this year, but due to Corona, the BCCI has now decided to hold the plans. According to BCCI officials, their priority now is to complete the postponed IPL and the decision on new teams for IPL 2022 will be taken after the event.

According to BCCI sources and some media reports, the number of maximum players allowed to be retained will be reduced. Currently, 5 players are retained by each franchise which includes 3 through normal retention and 2 via Right to Match (RTM).
It may come down to a maximum of 3 players. This is done to provide more quality players in the auction pool. More details regarding this will be provided closer to the IPL 2022 mega auction.
The BCCI said in a press release yesterday (28th Sep) that two new teams for the IPL will be announced on October 25.
IPL 2022 Mega Auction Dates
Though no official date has been announced so far by the BCCI or IPL officials, it is believed that for the fifteenth season of IPL there may be a mega auction that could happen at the end of January or February.
However, the auction for VIVO IPL 2021 took place in February, so we can assume that there will be an auction for 2022 around the same month.
