Update: July 20
The Indian Premier League (IPL) which started in 2008 is currently the fastest-growing sports league in the world. Attracting big players, sponsors, tv rights, owners, etc. But how does it compare to the world’s other sports leagues? Let’s have an analysis about
IPL vs Other Sports Leagues
If we talk about the list of the 50 wealthiest leagues in the world of sport, it comes as no surprise that IPL is way behind other leagues. The list is dominated by soccer. But what is more interesting that no other cricket league apart from the IPL stands on the list.
Cricket is a huge sport, which is ranked 2nd in terms of the number of audiences. The National Football League (America), Major League Baseball (USA & Canada), and English Premier League (England) are ranked as the top 3 richest sports leagues in the world, with revenue into the billions of dollars.
IPL is the richest sports league in India. It has an estimated average value of around $45 million to $50 million per team, while the Indian Super League has an estimated value of under $7.5 million per team. This difference is huge.
IPL vs Other Sports Leagues
If we focus on the brand value rankings, which are calculated from the value of the teams to sponsorship and prize money, then the Indian Premier League (IPL) is ranked 18th on the list. It’s behind the third richest baseball league, Korea Professional Baseball (KPB), and is also behind 8 soccer leagues as well as the world’s biggest sports leagues such as basketball, hockey, and auto racing leagues.
If we talk about the top 50 richest teams in a sports league, there isn’t a single cricket team on the list. It is dominated mostly by a handful of super-rich sports which include basketball, football, baseball, rugby, etc.
It wouldn’t be fair to compare these teams to any IPL cricket team. The reason is that all these teams have been present for many decades, but IPL is just 13 years old. Out of the ten richest teams in the world, for example, the youngest (New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys) were founded way back in the year 1959.
The 50th ranked team on this list, which is the last rank is valued under $2 billion, compared to the $60 to $95 million value of IPL teams. Based on this figure, there is a long way to go before any of the IPL team ranks under the top 50. However, if they continue getting good sponsorship and keep getting big players, they can jump into the top 50 teams very soon.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the fastest-growing leagues on the list of the top 20 richest sports leagues across the globe. It is due to an increase in TV sponsorship rights, brand endorsements, etc.
If it continues to grow at the present rate, then by the time it is as old as the English Premier League (EPL) which is 28 years old, it could easily be one of the top 5 richest Leagues in the world. The future looks bright for the IPL in years to come. We hope this cricket league continues to prosper.
