Seeing the grand success of the IPL, a lot of cricket nations followed the tide and started their own t20 club cricket leagues to catch on to the enormous monetary benefits. Apart from the IPL, we have other similar cricket leagues such as PSL, BBL, BPL, The Hundred, etc. Another new name will be added to this list by the name UAE T20 league.
This T20 cricket league, to be organized by the Emirates cricket board, will be the second costliest cricket league after the IPL, with the highest-paid cricketer expected to get USD 4,50,000 per season.
AN OVERVIEW OF THE UAE T20 LEAGUE
The UAE T20 cricket league was previously scheduled to begin in January 2022, but due to logistic issues and other aspects, it got delayed and will now take from 6th Jan- 12th Feb 2023 in the gulf country. It will be organized by the Emirates Cricket Club (ECB).
A total of 6 teams will participate in the inaugural edition, and 34 matches will be played. Every team will play with other teams twice in the league stage. Each team can have a maximum of 9 foreign players in the playing XI, while one UAE and one associate player is a must.
THE OWNERS OF THE UAE T20 LEAGUE
Three of the six franchises in the upcoming T20 tournament have been purchased by IPL owners, including Mumbai Indians (MI), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Delhi Capitals (DC). The rest of the three teams are owned by Lancer Capital, which is led by Avram Glazer, part of the ownership of prominent football club Manchester United, top India business firm Adani Group, and Capri Global.
HOW IT COMPARE WITH OTHER T20 LEAGUES
The UAE T20 Cricket league is all set to give its competitors a headache. The reason for the same is the enormous money which will be pumped in. According to reports, each team will have a salary cap of USD 2.5 million per year.
The maximum salary cap for the highest earned player is fixed at USD 4,50,000 per season. If we compare it with the highest-paid cricketer in Pakistan Super League (PSL), they can earn up to USD 200,000.
Similarly, the highest-paid player in the Hundred (a league in England) gets USD 164,000, while the most expensive foreign player in the Big Bash League gets USD 238,000 per season. So, it’s evident that the UAE t20 cricket league will be a keenly watched tournament.
