FIFA 2026: Egypt Make World Cup History, Reaches Knockout Stage for First Time Ever. After a thrilling 1- 1 tie against Iran in their final Group G match, Egypt has become the first African country to reach the knockout stage at the FIFA 2026 World Cup. Because of this draw, the Pharaohs will advance to play against Australia on July 3rd in Dallas in the next round of 32 teams. Hossam Ashed’s squad finished with five points after three games played in Group G behind Belgium, who won the group with five points and a goal differential following the Wallabies’ thrashing of New Zealand 5-1 last week.
Egypt started strong against Iran with Mahmoud Saber scoring early on a rebound of Mohamed Salah’s attempt. After taking a 1-0 lead early, Egypt eventually surrendered a goal to Ramin Rezaeian of Iran to keep their qualification dreams alive.
VAR Drama Seals Historic Qualification
At one point during stoppage time, it appeared as if Iran would complete an amazing comeback when Shoja Khalilzadeh placed the ball in the back of the net, but after reviewing with VAR, the goal was called back for offside, thus preserving Egypt’s chance for success. In addition, Egypt’s keeper, Mostafa Shobeir, had many key moments, including stopping a penalty shot before that qualifying goal.
This accomplishment represents the first time an Egyptian national team has won a match at the World Cup. Previously, Egypt had qualified for the World Cup four times but had not advanced past group play. The success of Egypt’s undefeated campaign has given new meaning to their history in the FIFA tournament.
