Shubman Gill Set to Be Named India’s New Test Captain on May 23 or 24| Reports. The retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from test cricket has led to a major leadership transition in the Indian cricket team. Shubman Gill will captain Team India for the England test series starting on 20th June. They will play 5 tests, with the last match at the Oval starting from 31st July. This is because of the selectors’ wish to invest in long-term leadership. According to some reports, he will be announced as India’s Test Captain on May 23 or 24. This comes after talks with Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir.
With 5 centuries, 7 half centuries, and an average of 35.06, Gill has scored 1893 runs in 32 matches.
Why Shubman Gill?
Shubman Gill’s leadership background has been enhanced by serving as vice-captain of India in limited-overs cricket and leading the Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He has often been commended for his calm temperament and strategic treatment. Delhi Capitals mentor Ricky Ponting also pointed out his batting and leadership qualities.
The BCCI is interested in Shubman Gill taking on the Test captaincy to provide stable leadership in the WTC 2025-27 cycle. Jasprit Bumrah was another candidate, however, injury concerns coupled with the physically demanding nature of fast bowling have made Gill look like the best option in the long term.
India’s former batting coach, Vikram Rathour, said he is confident Gill’s captaincy will elevate his game.
