Nicholas Pooran Announces Retirement from International Cricket at 29. West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran has announced his international retirement at the age of 29 years. He declared that, through his official social media handles, he was reflecting with gratitude upon his career that lasted almost 10 years.

Pooran had made his international debut in 2016 and, in 61 ODIs, scored 1,983 runs, with 2,275 runs in 106 T20Is. He sits at the top as the highest run-scorer for West Indies in T20 internationals. Aggressive in anything he ever played – cricket – more so with his bat in hand, he also led his side in white-ball cricket, especially during the 2022 T20 World Cup.

That farewell note of his stated, “Wearing that maroon meant everything to me. Though this chapter closes, my love for West Indies cricket will never fade.” He called the decision “difficult”, casting a hint that perhaps it was time to look ahead to other things.

His early retirement further adds to the growing list of players who have chosen to forgo international cricket to focus on the numerous franchise leagues around the world. However, Pooran is still expected to keep active in such leagues, particularly the IPL, where he had a wonderful season recently with the Lucknow Super Giants.
