Pant registered his seventh Test hundred, the most by an Indian wicketkeeper, overtaking the record previously held by MS Dhoni, who had six.
And just when India seemed destined to breach 500, a sudden collapse took them to 41 for 7 in no time, and England looked to be coming hard back through the captain Ben Stokes, who bagged four wickets, and Josh Tongue with 4 off 86. Shoaib Bashir also chipped in during the late second session, as India were all out, giving England an innings window to respond before stumps.
England’s innings had a rocky start with Jasprit Bumrah removing Zak Crawley in the first over. Ben Duckett looked good with a score of 62, but he fell to Bumrah, as did Joe Root. With the home side in trouble at 64/3, Ollie Pope and Root took their time to settle. Pope was dropped once and survived a close DRS call and made it count with a classy knock for his ninth Test century.
