Doordarshan to Telecast FIFA World Cup 2026

Doordarshan to Telecast FIFA World Cup 2026 Matches in India. India’s public broadcaster Doordarshan is set to telecast FIFA World Cup 2026 matches live across the country. The development comes after private broadcasters avoided bidding for the tournament’s media rights. The World Cup will be hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Most matches will begin late at night for Indian viewers. Several games will also start during early morning hours. Broadcasters reportedly feared lower television ratings because of the inconvenient timings.

Advertising revenue concerns also reduced private interest in the tournament. FIFA initially demanded nearly $100 million for the India broadcast rights. Later, FIFA reportedly reduced its expectations to around $30 million. However, Reliance-Disney valued the rights at less than $20 million. The huge valuation gap prevented a final agreement between both sides. Sony Pictures Networks also stayed away from the bidding process.

Big Boost for Indian Football Fans

Doordarshan’s involvement could become a major advantage for football supporters across India. DD Sports reaches millions of households through free-to-air television services. Fans may now watch the tournament without expensive subscriptions or streaming packages. This could significantly increase accessibility for viewers in smaller towns and rural areas. Prasar Bharati reportedly entered discussions after private broadcasters showed little interest. The move may prevent a blackout of the tournament in India.

Despite India not qualifying, the FIFA World Cup remains hugely popular among Indian football fans. Countries like Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, France, and England enjoy massive support in India. FIFA has already finalised broadcasting agreements in several global markets. However, India remained unresolved until Doordarshan stepped forward for the telecast.
