Chepauk Stadium is Undergoing Major Upgrades For T20 World Cup And IPL 2026. The M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, popularly known as Chepauk, is undergoing major construction and renovations in time for two major cricket sporting events—the T20 World Cup 2026 and the IPL 2026. The refurbishment was meant to update the historic stadium while keeping the original spirit of the iconic venue.

Reports indicate that the renovations will be done in phases to have the venue ready on time. Also, several seating arrangements in several stands are to be reconfigured to enhance visibility, comfort, and capacity. Improved hospitality areas, corporate boxes, and fan zones should bring a better experience for fans.

Pitch, Playing Surface, and Player Facilities

A lot is going on for the playing side as well. This includes efforts for the pitch and outfield. The curators are seeking balanced surfaces to accommodate T20 cricket, a high-intensity game. The drainage system is also being upgraded to reduce rain delays, and new turf is being laid for a quicker and more consistent outfield.

Further, to cater to global broadcasts, sky boxes/media boxes, commentary booths, and state-of-the-art lighting are being updated.

Accessibility is also a vital area of focus. Improved entry/exit points, security screening zones, and public transport connectivity will be provided. These improvements are all designed to help cope with the huge crowds expected during each tournament.

From a timeline perspective, the project will be almost fully complete by late 2025 to enable the stadium to still host warm-up matches or domestic fixtures ahead of the tournaments. With these upgrades, Chepauk can continue to be one of India’s top cricket venues whilst blending the old with the new and preparing itself for the packed 2026 season.
