Virat Kohli Retires from Test Cricket, End of a Glorious Era. The glorious 14-year career came down in the longest format when run-chase master Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket. The announcement arrived just weeks before India is scheduled to tour England for Tests, making it clear that Kohli would no longer be available for the red-ball format.

Kohli shared a very emotional post on social media, saying, “It has been 14 years of wearing the Indian Test jersey. It has been a journey of challenges, lessons, and some extremely memorable moments. Test cricket made me who I am.”

36-year-old Kohli finishes his Test career with 9,230 runs in 123 matches, averaging 46.85. He has 30 hundreds and 31 fifties to his name, with a career-best score of 254* against South Africa in 2019.

A fine performer under his bat, Kohli was also one of India’s most successful Test captains. He has led India in 68 random matches, winning 40 of them — including a crushing series victory down under in 2018-19. He also took India to the finals of the World Test Championship in 2021.

The Indian cricketing setup has seen a paradigm shift of sorts with Kohli’s and Rohit Sharma’s recent retirements from the format. With both the veterans now gone, the onus will be on youngsters like Shubman Gill to shoulder bigger responsibilities.

His retirement signals the closure of the dawn of an unforgettable chapter in Indian cricket; however, he will continue to play white-ball cricket and will definitely be in the schemes of India for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
