Somali Referee Omar Artan Denied U.S. Entry Ahead of World Cup

Somali Referee Omar Artan Denied U.S. Entry Ahead of World Cup, Receives Hero’s Welcome in Mogadishu. A hero’s welcome was given to Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan this week upon his return to Mogadishu after being turned away from the USA with a valid visa. Artan, the 2025 CAF Men’s Referee of the Year, travelled to Miami for FIFA’s training camp last week, where he had a close chance of becoming the first-ever Somali referee to officiate at a FIFA 2026 World Cup.

However, U.S. Customs and Border Protection stopped Artan when he arrived. It’s reported that he was questioned for more than 11 hours at Miami International Airport, with questions about possible ties to suspected terrorists and Al Shabaab. Security concerns under the Trump administration were given as the reason for denying Artan access. Artan strongly denied all allegations implicating him in being connected to extremist groups. This prevented him from participating in FIFA’s preparations in Florida before they head to the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Hero’s Welcome Back Home

Artan’s visa denial news received strong reactions throughout Somalia. Hundreds of fans came to the airport to welcome him back and to recognise his achievements and help build Somali football. Artan stayed cool through the discouragement of his chance at the World Cup. When talking about the event, Artan said that it was fate that led him into the future. In the end, the referee encouraged the young Somalis to continue pursuing what they wanted.

Canada Extends Support

Canada has expressed willingness to accept Artan despite the controversy surrounding his visa denial by USA. This decision is being welcomed as a positive development by both local football fans and the broader Somali community. Furthermore, Artan’s situation highlights the systemic challenges and stringent travel restrictions that many officials and fans face when trying to secure visas for the World Cup.

Artan has been missed in the tournament; however, his legacy has not seen a greater increase in popularity than he has experienced since the World Cup began. Artan’s impact has instilled a sense of pride for many young officials in Somalia and Africa. Artan, regardless of the ruling, is still hailed as a hero of the World Cup.
