Shubman Gill Likely to Lead T20Is, Shreyas Iyer in Line for ODI Captaincy. The BCCI is slowly making plans for a leadership transition that could alter the future of Indian cricket altogether. Recent reports suggest Shubman Gill is being lined up to replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s next T20I captain. At the same time, Shreyas Iyer is the leading contender to take over ODI leadership.
Gill’s Position in T20I Leadership
Gill was brought back into India’s T20I setup for the Asia Cup 2025 and, surprisingly, became vice-captain. Gill’s calm disposition, maturity, and consistent performances convinced the selectors that his T20I captaincy would be a long-term proposition. Cricket great Sunil Gavaskar has also endorsed Gill’s captaincy potential, saying Gill “could be captaining India soon” in T20Is.

Iyer to Take Over ODI Leadership
On the ODI side, the BCCI is contemplating Shreyas Iyer as the next captain. A change from Rohit Sharma is probably dependent on his decision relating to his future in 50-over cricket. The selectors see Gill as a superstar in all formats of the game. However, a workload issue prompted the selectors to assign roles equitably. Iyer could replace Rohit Sharma and captain India until the 2027 ODI World Cup, giving Iyer enough time to create some authority and direction.
The board is comfortable with a two-captain approach across three formats, with Gill captaining T20Is, Iyer managing ODIs in the short term, and Rohit Sharma retained for now as Test captain. There will be a meeting at some point following the Asia Cup to decide on the ODI captaincy, and both Gill and Iyer have been identified as data holistically for a long time.
This two-captain approach is about the BCCI’s vision of managing workloads and facilitating new leadership while keeping Indian cricket strong across all formats.
