Shubman Gill Likely To Be Named Vice-Captain For Asia Cup 2025. Shubman Gill will reportedly be the vice-captain of the T20I India team for the Asia Cup 2025, starting on September 9 in the UAE. Gill has just been appointed the new Test captain of India, on the recent tour of England, where he scored 754 runs to help India draw the series 2–2 with England. The BCCI sees him as a potential long-term leader for the team.

Gill’s appointment comes at a time when his consistent performances in all formats and a successful IPL season have led the selectors to believe that he is a possibility to replace Rohit Sharma as captain someday. If the appointment is confirmed, Gill will complement T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, allowing for stability and depth in the team.

Scheduling Challenge and Selection Call

There is a slight issue with scheduling. Gill is the captain of North Zone in the Duleep Trophy, starting on August 28, just before the Asia Cup fixtures. Reports are that Gill will join the Asia Cup. The selectors have left the final decision to be made based on team make-up and needed strategies.

The Asia Cup could also see Gill return to the T20Is after being absent from the shortest format since July 2024. As vice-captain, Gill would be a powerful example of restoring belief in his versatility and leadership in the face of challenge.

As India looks to build a strong campaign, led by Suryakumar, the presence of Gill as deputy adds tactical support as well as batting strength at the top of the order; the BCCI should announce the final squad soon, and attention will be highly focused on whether Gill gets selected for this key role.
