Shreyas Iyer BCCI contract

Shreyas Iyer Set to Re-enter BCCI Central Contracts: Shreyas Iyer, the middle-order Indian batsman, is set to reclaim his spot in the central contract of the Board of Control for Cricket in India after missing out last year. The development comes in light of Iyer’s immediate devotion to domestic cricket, particularly his inclusion in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy campaign. Based on his performances at home and abroad, the BCCI officials now appear favorable regarding his exclusion.

So why did Shreyas Iyer lose his BCCI central contract?

Iyer, with Ishan Kishan, was dropped from the BCCI’s annual central contract list in February 2024. This was because of his lack of enthusiasm to perform in domestic cricket. The BCCI had already given its mandate to all centrally contracted players that they should always give priority to domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy when they are not on duty with national teams. According to reports that came out, Iyer had missed Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final, citing workload management issues. But then went ahead to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This decision did not sit well with the BCCI, and hence he was left out of the central contracts list.

Of course, Iyer’s talent and experience were never questioned. The 29-year-old batter played a major role for India during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he earned himself a total of 530 runs in 11 matches, featuring prominently in semi-finals and finals. But his absence from domestic cricket has done him no favor but earned a boot from BCCI’s central contract structure.

How Did Iyer Recoup?

Realizing the significance of domestic cricket for a national team player, Iyer made a terrific comeback by playing in the Ranji Trophy semi-final and final for Mumbai. His feats were instrumental in Mumbai’s fortunes, highlighting his seriousness to first-class cricket and compatibility with BCCI expectations. This step has been a critical factor for the board to reconsider its contract status.

Iyer’s International Form and Future Prospects

Besides mostly the Ranji Trophy, Iyer has also been delivering promises in international cricket. Most recently, he was part of the Indian squad to visit England and performed very well in the 2025 Champions Trophy. His capability to hold the middle order, coupled with experience in crunch situations, makes him a strong candidate for the Indian team.
