Ravichandran Ashwin Retires From IPL, Opens Door To Overseas Leagues. Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), marking the end of a historic 16-year tenure. The 38-year-old Ashwin stepped away from international cricket in December 2024. He is now interested in exploring options for global franchises in overseas leagues.

Ashwin announced through social media, calling it both an ending and a “new beginning.” In a heartfelt post, he wrote, “My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins now. Grateful to the IPL, the BCCI, and all franchises for the memories.”

A Great IPL Career

Debuting with Chennai Super Kings in 2009, Ashwin represented multiple franchises (Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals) before returning to CSK for the 2025 season. He played 221 matches, taking 187 wickets—5th most in IPL history. It also includes 833 runs while in title wins with CSK in 2010 and 2011.

In his final IPL season, Ashwin played nine games, taking seven wickets. Though CSK had a disappointing season, Ashwin’s value in the dressing room as a senior statesman cannot be understated.

With the IPL and India now behind him, Ashwin is free to participate in international leagues like the Big Bash League, The Hundred, and other T20 leagues internationally. Overseas franchises will highly value Ashwin’s already creative and sharp cricketing mind.

Ashwin leaves the IPL as one of its most successful and respected spinners, closing one chapter while beginning another on the international franchise stage.
