Batting first, Australia started solidly, but they were dismissed for 236 in 47.5 overs. Matt Renshaw with 56 was the top scorer, while Travis Head (42) and Marnus Labuschagne (33) provided short but impactful innings. However, with a disciplined bowling performance from India, spearheaded by Harshit Rana’s outstanding 4/39, Australia faced an immediate middle-order collapse. Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar chipped in with two wickets, as Australia could not register a competitive total.

Rohit and Kohli’s chase masterclass

Chasing India’s innings was an exhibition of batting, led by a boundary-fuelled Rohit Sharma, who finished at 121 off 125 balls for his 33rd ODI century. Sharma combined with fellow opener Virat Kohli (74 off 81) to construct an unbroken 168-run partnership, easily carrying India home in 38.3 overs. The comfortable partnership was balanced with playing classic strokes and aggressiveness that hushed the Sydney crowd more than the performance of the bowlers and highlighted their place as one of the most successful partnerships in the modern ODI format.

India’s victory was a fitting culmination of their strong rally after losing the first two matches. The consistency of the bowlers and the experience of the duo during the chase were the two significant positives recognised.
