Asia Cup 2025: Rinku Singh Faces Uncertainty For Place In India’s Squad. As the Asia Cup 2025 is set to start on September 9 in the UAE, all eyes are now on India’s squad announcement, which takes place in Mumbai on August 19. One of the biggest talking points is the future of middle-order finisher Rinku Singh, as his place in the T20I side seems to be in serious doubt.
Rinku’s talent as India’s finisher was once unquestionable after his remarkable IPL performances, including his famous five-sixes blitz. However, in the past year, Rinku’s impact on games has taken a noticeable downturn. He missed the T20 World Cup 2024 altogether, only being named on the standby list, and then received limited opportunities in the last two IPL seasons. In IPL 2024, he faced just 113 balls, followed by 134 in IPL 2025, suggesting little favour in situations where games were on the line.
More Options for Middle-Order
The competition for places has only increased, with multi-skilled players such as Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, and Yashasvi Jaiswal all vying for a position in the squad. India’s mainstays, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Shubman Gill, are viable middle-order options, while all-rounders such as Shivam Dube and wicketkeeper-batters such as Jitesh Sharma allow selectors greater options.
India’s T20 strategy is more about versatile players who can contribute in more than one area of the game, meaning Rinku’s narrow role as a pure finisher could work against him. The selection committee may value players that can contribute some batting power along with secondary skills like bowling or keeping in a type of tournament where squad balance is important.

As we are now counting down the days until the selection date, it is now time for Rinku Singh’s fate to be determined. Rinku’s finishing abilities are unquestionable, but the ongoing evolution of modern T20 cricket means he will need more than six or seven big hits to find his way into India’s Asia Cup squad.
