For the first time, the PSL will use a player auction model. This move ends the draft-based system that has been used since the league began in 2016.
The decision was confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board this week. Officials said the change will improve competition and transparency. They also believe it will increase player value and fan interest. The PSL 2026 season will feature eight teams. Two new franchises have joined the league this year. These teams are Hyderabad and Sialkot.

Under the new rules, existing teams can retain only four players. Earlier, teams could retain up to eight players in the draft system. This reduction will push more star players into the auction pool. Each retained player must come from a different category. These categories include Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver, and Emerging. This rule ensures no team can stack elite players early.
New Franchises and League Expansion
The two new franchises get special privileges before the auction. Hyderabad and Sialkot can pre-sign four players each. These signings will come from the remaining player pool. This step helps new teams build competitive cores quickly. It also balances the league after expansion. Teams will also be allowed one direct overseas signing. This player must not have featured in the previous PSL season. The rule encourages fresh international talent.
The PCB has also increased the team salary cap. Each franchise will now have USD 1.6 million to spend. Previously, the salary cap was set at USD 1.3 million. The higher purse could trigger bidding wars at the auction. Top Pakistan and overseas players may earn higher contracts. PSL officials believe the auction will boost global attention. The event itself is expected to be televised. Fans could see intense bidding drama for star players.
