Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Face Uncertain 2027 World Cup Future. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future in the ODI World Cup 2027 is complicated. Reports suggest that they are not a part of the long-term planning of the team currently. The focus now is to build a younger core for the next cycle with a view to preparing a side for the 2027 World Cup, which will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

However, the two legends remain a viable option. According to a source in the BCCI, if Kohli and Rohit still want to be in India’s ODI team, they will need to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. It is the premier 50-over domestic competition in the country. It allows the selectors to assess players’ form and fitness in competitive conditions outside of the international calendar.

With both players now retired from T20Is and Tests, their opportunities to keep themselves match fit are extremely limited. The board is keen to see them commit to playing in domestic cricket if they want to feature in key ICC events.

India’s ODI series against Australia in October 2025 will also serve as a significant milestone. Solid outings in domestic cricket, with some notable performances, could still give them a chance for the World Cup. If they don’t show enough, the natural flow would see a shift to younger players.

As it stands, management has been clear—there will be no guarantee of selection based on just experience. If Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli want to extend their ODI careers to 2027, they need to display that capability in domestic cricket, commencing with the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
