Jacob Bethell to Become Youngest England Captain in History for Ireland T20I Series. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed Jacob Bethell as the captain for the upcoming three-match T20 International series against Ireland starting on 17th September. Bethell, 21, will be the youngest player to captain the England men’s team in any format of international cricket, taking that accolade from Monty Bowden, who was 23 years and 144 days old when he captained England vs. Australia in 1888.

Bethell has made 29 international appearances in his career so far, across all formats. The ECB has chosen to bring him into the captaincy as part of their rotation policy, and with a few of the more senior players rested after the tour of South Africa. Selecting Bethell, the ECB has shown strong confidence in the young man’s leadership, having seen him on the field and taken note of his maturity, tactical awareness, and batting, bowling and fielding.

An Opportunity for Jacob Bethell to Make a Record

This captaincy is a big step in Bethell’s short career. He is known for his aggressive left-handed batting and valuable left-handed spin bowling. He has also shown good temperament when playing for England. Selector Luke Wright hailed the decision as a chance for Bethell to further develop his leadership skills on the international stage.
