IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill Surpasses Sunil Gavaskar’s Record For Most Runs By An Indian Captain In A Test Series. Shubman Gill has secured his place in the cricketing record books after surpassing the legendary Sunil Gavaskar for most runs by an Indian captain in one Test series. Captain crossed the 733-run mark in the ongoing fifth Test at The Oval, surpassing Gavaskar’s 732-run total during the 1978-79 series against the West Indies.

Gill has been superb with the bat, leading India for the first time in a Test series. He has scored four centuries in five Tests, with the highlight being a mammoth 269 runs at Edgbaston in a single innings, and 161 in the second innings, combined for a massive 430 runs in a single match. He has become just the third captain, along with Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar, to score four centuries in one Test series.

Gill is also the first Indian to score over 700 runs in an away series. He currently has an average of over 90 in the series. He is now part of a pair with KL Rahul, who also scored over 500 runs. They are the first Indian pair in 55 years to each score over 500 runs in an overseas series; the last pair to achieve this was Gavaskar and Dilip Sardesai in 1971.
