In sublime touch, Root reached his 67th Test fifty and became the first batter to cross 3,000 Test runs against India. Pope was dismissed for 44 in the final session, caught in the slips off a Jadeja delivery.
Brook, though, formless for much of the day, was clean bowled by Bumrah with a peach of a delivery. At the close of play, Root was 99* and Stokes 39*. For India, it has been a day to remember for Nitish Reddy (2/46), Jasprit Bumrah (1/35), and Ravindra Jadeja (1/26). With Root still out there and England at 251, the match remains in the balance.
