In pursuit of an intimidating 339, India mounted one of the most remarkable comebacks in the history of women’s ODI cricket to secure a date in the final against South Africa.
Having elected to bat first, Australia amassed a total of 338/6. Phoebe Litchfield was the star of the show and scored a wonderful 119 runs off 96 balls, and in support of her innings was Ellyse Perry, who scored 77 runs. Their partnership of 153 runs proved crucial in putting India under pressure before Amanjot Kaur and Radha Yadav were able to put the skids on the scoring in the closing overs of Australia’s innings.
Jemimah Rodrigues’ masterclass leads India’s chase
India’s chase got off to a rocky start, with Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana dismissed cheaply; the latter fell to a DRS controversy that was hotly debated on social media. Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur combined for a brilliant 152-run partnership that steadied the innings. Rodrigues showcased nerves of steel, scoring a fabulous 127 off 118 balls*, while Harmanpreet scored a sustained 72 that anchored the middle overs.
Although there was a moment of instability following the captain’s departure, the Indian lower order remained steadfast. Richa Ghosh’s rapid 34, followed by Deepti Sharma’s cool-headed composure, saw India home with six balls to spare, clinching the highest successful chase in the history of Women’s World Cup semi-finals and inducing ecstatic celebrations from the Indian members.
