He announced in an emotional post on Instagram on Monday, June 2, 2025, stating that he had decided to retire to devote more time to his family.
He made his international cricket debut for South Africa in February 2018. He participated in 122 international games (4 tests, 60 ODIs, and 58 T20Is) during his 7-year international cricket career. He scored over 2,141 runs in ODIs, 1,000 runs in T20Is, and 104 runs in Tests with 4 centuries internationally.
Klaasen was seen as an attacking batter and especially made an impact in world cricket as an attacking limited-overs cricketer. He even played a particularly flashy innings at one point. Knocking 174 off 83 balls against Australia in September 2023 in an ODI. His batting also helped the Proteas progress to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final in 2024, which they lost by a whisker to India.

Although he is now retired from international cricket, he is still likely to play domestic and franchise cricket, for example, for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.
