England Players Fined, Lose WTC Points for Slow Overrate at Lord’s. England cricket team has been penalised 10% of their match fees and lost two World Test Championship (WTC) points for a slow over-rate during the third Test against India at Lord’s. England won in a nail-biting match by 22 runs and took a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Their over-rate was found to be two overs short of the supposed runs having been made, with the batting time allowances included.
If teams are short on overs, the ICC’s Code of Conduct enforces a partial punishment of 5 per cent of match fees for every over short. 1 WTC point for every over that has not been bowled in time. Captain Ben Stokes accepted the penalty.

The penalty has had a significant effect on the WTC table. England’s points dropped from 24 to 22, and the WTC percentage from 66.67% to 61.11%, leaving them in third place, behind Sri Lanka, with Australia at the top.
This outcome has ignited new debates about over-rate penalties. Some of the commentators also criticised the umpires for not doing more to ensure proper over rates were observed in the match. As England prepare for the fourth Test at Old Trafford on July 23, the over-rate debate continues.
