BREAKING: Rohit Sharma Announces Immediate Retirement from Test Cricket. Indian test team captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket. The 38-year-old opener made this announcement on May 7, 2025, closing a red-ball career that went on for more than ten years and stamped a lasting mark.

With the rumors from the selectors to remove Rohit Sharma as Test captain ahead of next season, the BCCI made the uncertainty over the leadership dynamic and long-term roadmap for the Test side the basis for considering that decision. Rohit, fully aware of this changing tide, decided to retire on his own accord.

Rohit has played 67 Tests and scored 4,301 runs with an average of 40.57. He also has 12 test centuries with a highest score of 212. A career that started in the middle order was a real transformation. Rohit was established as an opener in 2019, marking a major turning point, especially through India’s supremacy in the World Test Championship.

Taking over Test captaincy in early 2022 shortly after Virat Kohli’s resignation, India has played 24 matches with Rohit, winning 12 and losing 9 under his command. Rohit was regarded as cool, assessing situations astutely, and handling a very critical transition period in Indian cricket with ease.
