Asia Cup 2025: Afghanistan Crushed Hong Kong By 94 Runs In Opener. Afghanistan showcased an all-around performance to trash Hong Kong by 94 runs in the opening game of the Asia Cup 2025 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi.
Batting first, Afghanistan posted a total of 188 for 6 in 20 overs. Highlighting the innings was a phenomenal unbeaten 73 off 52 deliveries from Sediqullah Atal and a record-breaking 53 off just 21 balls from Azmatullah Omarzai, who struck the fastest ever T20I half-century for Afghanistan. Despite the explosive start from opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who did not last long after being taken out by Hong Kong’s Ayush Shukla, the Afghan middle order produced a hefty score.
Hong Kong’s inning
Hong Kong’s reply never got into gear. The Afghans put Hong Kong under pressure early, and within the powerplay they were staggering at 23 for 4. Rashid Khan rotated his spinners well, most importantly keeping the pressure from all the pacers, which made the batsmen struggle to gain any momentum. Though there was some resistance, Hong Kong eventually limped to 94 for 9 in 20 overs, well short of the target.
The win not only gave Afghanistan two vital points but also sent a message to the rest of the tournament. With their batting depth on display while their spin-heavy attack is in unison, Rashid Khan’s side has made its case to be serious contenders for the Asia Cup trophy.
