National Sports Bill Raises Age Limit, Roger Binny Can Continue As BCCI President. BCCI will be one of the National Sports Federations (NSFs) that fall under the National Sports Governance Bill, which will substantially change NSFs. One of the major aspects of the draft bill is that it has raised the age limit from 70 years to 75 years. This will also allow senior administrators like BCCI president Roger Binny to stay in power longer.
This means that he is disqualified from continuing in that position per the BCCI constitution. However, if the bill is debated in the current Parliament’s Monsoon Session and passed soon thereafter, Roger Binny would be able to seek re-election and serve a further 3-year term or more before the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held, presumably sometime after September.
The Sports Ministry has also stated that although the BCCI is a financially independent body, it is an NSF. Therefore, the BCCI lies within the ambit of the Bill. The provision states that an office-bearer between the ages of 70 and 75 can still complete a full term. In the interim, expectedly, vice-president Rajeev Shukla will take charge as the acting president. The BCCI is considering its options in light of the legislation and internal timelines.

Should the bill be passed, it will help Binny elongate his term and also has the potential to increase transparency and uniformity in governance standards across Indian sports bodies. The focus is now on Parliament as the future leadership of Indian cricket hangs in the balance.
