India Tour Of Australia 2025: Shubman Gill Named New ODI Captain as India Announces Squad. India has announced its ODI and T20I squads for the highly anticipated tour of Australia, scheduled for later this month. The biggest news from the announcement is the appointment of Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma and marking a generational shift in leadership ahead of the ICC World Cup in 2027.

Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, took questions from the media. He confirmed the leadership change while addressing the future of India’s experienced veterans.

“Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are non-committal about the 2027 World Cup. We’ve had conversations with them, and they understand the need to start building a team for the future,” said Agarkar.

Gill, who has demonstrated consistency across formats, will lead a team comprising a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the vice-captain, while KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel will share the keeping duties. Rohit and Kohli remain in the ODI tour squad but have uncertain futures.
