Australia have displayed once again why they are the most dangerous team in women’s cricket. Under the captaincy of Alyssa Healy, Australia finished top of the group stages with strong all-round performances, including a stunning 7/18 from Alana King against South Africa. The batting contributions from Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, and Tahlia McGrath have all been strong.
India, on the other hand, has shown their capacity to respond under pressure. Following a poor start, Harmanpreet Kaur’s team showed improvement to finish fourth on the table. Consistency from Smriti Mandhana, explosive batting from Richa Ghosh, and complete performances in all areas from Deepti Sharma have been central to India’s progression. However, Pratika Rawal’s injury will likely force Shafali Verma to return to the top order.
Pitch and Weather Report
The DY Patil surface has been a batting paradise this tournament, with true bounce and lightning-fast outfields. Batting first, teams have regularly crossed 300, but the overcast conditions might allow a bit for the pacers. The weather remains a great concern, however. Mumbai has a yellow alert for rain on match day, so if the match is washed out and the reserve day (October 31) is called off, Australia will advance to the final, as they finished higher in the group stage.
Head-to-Head
Australia is ahead in the head-to-head, winning 49 out of 60 ODIs between the countries, and in World Cups they are ahead 11-3. But India has stunned them in knockout matches on two occasions, most notably the 2017 World Cup semifinal, so they are capable of rising to the occasion on the bigger stage.
