IND vs SA 1st Test South Africa Seal 30-Run Win as India Collapse on Day 3 at Eden Gardens. On Day 3, South Africa produced a remarkable display to overcome India by 30 runs in the first Test at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, achieving their first victory on Indian soil in 15 years. In a close, low-scoring match, affected predominantly by the bowlers, the Proteas showed their composure when it mattered most to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
India came out with their tail up, but South Africa began their second innings at 93/7 and relied heavily on captain Temba Bavuma, who played one of the finest innings of his career. Bavuma’s unbeaten 55 on a rough surface turned out to be decisive as South Africa amassed 153 in their second innings and set India a target of 125.
Harmer’s Spell Triggers India Collapse
India’s chase set off well but got worse as South Africa’s spinners and seamers managed to create sharp turns and bounces that weren’t always predictable. Simon Harmer took 4/21 and was the wrecker-in-chief, expertly demolishing India’s middle order. He took a total of 8 wickets in the match and was the standout player in the Test. India crumbled to 93 all out in 35 overs, under pressure, on a pitch where survival was an achievement in itself.
The absence of Indian skipper Shubman Gill, who had to sit out because of a spasm in his neck, proved costly as India struggled for composure and depth in the chase. Earlier in the match, there was some hope for India when Jasprit Bumrah struck for 5/38 in South Africa’s first innings, but the batting unit could not capitalise on Bumrah’s lead.
