IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill Smashes Records with Century at Old Trafford, Reaches 720+ Runs in the Series. Shubman Gill, India’s Test captain, scored a brilliant century (103) on Day 5 of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford. He will have written history books a few times with a flurry of record-breaking achievements.
After India lost two wickets for zero runs early on, Gill was under pressure. He made a 188 run partnership with KL Rahul. Gill’s century was a two-day display of patience and shot-making until he finally fell to Jofra Archer.
With this innings, Gill became the first player in Test cricket to score four centuries in his first series as a captain, setting aside the records of Steve Smith and Virat Kohli, and also the third captain ever to score four centuries in a Test series, joining legends Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar.
Gill now has the record for:
- Joint most centuries for an Indian captain in a Test series
- Most centuries for an Indian captain in an away Test series
- The first Indian in 35 years to score a Test hundred at Manchester (since Tendulkar, 1990)
- The first Indian captain in 46 years to score four Test hundreds in a series (since Gavaskar).
- The most runs by an Indian in a Test series vs. England

Gill’s count has now surpassed 720 runs; he already passed Kohli’s tally of runs in the 2014 England tour and Jaiswal’s tally of 2025, set earlier in the series. With one Test to play at The Oval, he is also well placed to eclipse Gavaskar’s iconic total of 774 runs from 1971.
Shubman Gill’s consistency and captaincy have completed his series, meaning we will be able to look to a new generation’s batting giant; he is rewriting Indian cricket history one century at a time.
