Glenn Maxwell Bids Adieu To ODI Cricket, Will Continue In T20Is. Australian cricket all-rounder announced his immediate retirement from the ODI format during a discussion with Cricket Australia’s media, signing off on June 2, 2025. Maxwell cited the physical strain and repeated injuries as his reason. He continued to say that he will be still available for T20Is and looked forward to contributing to Australia’s 2026 campaign in the format.

Glenn Maxwell Acclaimed ODI Career

Maxwell’s ODI journey began in 2012 against Afghanistan; 13 years and mighty many changes later, it ended with Maxwell being among the most exciting players ever seen in the ODI format. He aggregated 3,990 runs in 149 matches at an average of 33.81, which came at a brilliant strike rate of 126.70, the second-highest in the whole ODI history among those players who have scored more than 2,000 runs. Maxwell was an important bowler in the ODI format too, taking 77 wickets; he also accounted for 91 catches.

2023 was the year for an unmatched Maxwell moment in the history of the World Cup. Maxwell, in one of the greatest ODI innings of all time, hammered 201 not out against Afghanistan to set the highest ever ODI score by an Australian in a World Cup, sealing a memorable win for Australia.

Maxwell said that the physicality of the 50-over format was a big consideration in coming to his decision. He gave instances at the 2025 Champions Trophy where a wet outfield against Afghanistan left him sore and struggling to recover.

Continued Commitment to T20Is

Maxwell remained committed to T20I cricket despite having retired from ODIs. He went on to state that he was confident the shorter format suited both his style of play and his physical condition, thereby placing him in a position to contribute significantly to the team’s cause. His ambition is to be in Australia’s lineup for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
