Gautam Gambhir To Rejoin Team India in Leeds on June 17 as Mother’s Health Stabilizes. In a major relief for Team India, head coach Gautam Gambhir will rejoin the national squad in Leeds tomorrow (June 17) ahead of the first Test against England. Gambhir had returned to Delhi last week after a sudden health issue faced by his mother, Seema Gambhir, resulted in her hospitalization in critical health.

Gambhir was not a member of the team when it was most critical to have him there in preparation time, but he still kept in touch with the support staff. Assistant coaches, mainly Ryan ten Doeschate, ran the sessions while Gambhir was not present, because the India squad took part in a four-day intra-squad game at Beckenham.

Reports of Seema Gambhir’s health have improved substantially. Now that she is stable and under observation, Gambhir can decide to return to England for the start of the series.

Gambhir will hopefully arrive in Leeds on Monday evening and catch up with the team. This is a boost for India, particularly as this will be Gambhir’s first task as the full-time head coach of the India senior men’s Test team.

The five-Test series against India against England begins on June 20 at Headingley—the start of the new World Test Championship (2025-27) cycle. As India is led by Shubman Gill for the first time in Tests, Gambhir’s involvement will provide important tactical insight and leadership in the dressing room.

The BCCI and various past cricketers have wished Gambhir’s mother a full and speedy recovery and welcomed his return to the Indian camp in a time of need.
