Angelo Mathews to Retire from Test Cricket After Bangladesh Series Opener. Sri Lankan cricketing great Angelo Mathews has finally bowed out of the longest format after a 16-year illustrious career. The 37-year-old all-rounder is set to add one last Test to his resume in a two-match home series against Bangladesh, with the first Test staged from early June at the Galle International Stadium.
The entire phase of Mathews’ career essentially began from Galle itself, having made his Test debut there against Pakistan in July 2009. He has been one of the most reliable performers for Sri Lanka in the Crucible of Cricket. In 118 Test matches, Mathews scored 8,167 runs with an average of 44.62, hitting 16 hundreds and 45 fifties. His top score came when he remained unbeaten on 200 against Zimbabwe in 2020 at Harare Sports Club.
Mathews also accounted for 33 wickets in Tests, with best bowling figures of 4 for 44, which helped in many of Sri Lanka’s memorable wins. He stands third on the list of highest run scorers in Test cricket for Sri Lanka, with only Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene ahead of him. While Mathews is stepping down from Test cricket, he does affirm that he is still available to represent Sri Lanka in the white-ball formats if and when they call upon his services.
